New Suit and wife's 5Ks

So, I am week and a half away from my first Olympic Distance Triathlon (www.mitrathlon.com). I am very exited, a bit nervous, and very anxious. I can't even concentrate to do my school work; I've got to finish an assignment before race day, since it is due race day.

Last Monday I bought my first tri suit, its a Pearl Izumi Select Tri Suit. I bought it at a local store here in my town that opened not more than 3 months ago and they are my source of fuel gels...gotta support local businesses: No Boundaries. I already tried the suit on the pool and bike, and a short jog, very comfi.

On a side note, my wife always reluctant to run, always saying she doesn't like it; run a 5k in January for her little brother's school, and now she is hooked on 5K races. Same day I bought my suit, she bought some very nice Pearl Izumi's running shoes. She asked me to prepare her a 5K training program (and asked how to improve her stride). Same day she signed up for this race www.1040k.org, and will register soon for the Miami's Dirty Mud 5K event. She is even asking for a watch with GPS, HR, pace, and the works. For now she will be using my forerunner 305.

Last Saturday went swimming and biking with my dad. Here is a picture we took after the swim.

Preparing for Miami International Triathlon

Well, I am back.

Last December (2010), I registered for the Miami International Triathlon on March 20, 2011. Right after this I started the training.

I feel strong for this event, I am able to crank some fast speeds on the bike and my run pace is pretty good too. The swim while stronger, is nothing to write home about. I just want to finish the swim with an OK time and go as hard as I can on the bike and run.

It appears that this event will have some cold water and will be wet-suit legal; I had to call a friend to borrow his as I do not own one.

I will be doing the bike leg again with my sister's bike, as with the previous 2 events. This race will be the last for my current running shoes.

The best thing about this event, I will be going against me dad. He has done the Miami International Tri twice before, but we are both running the new circuit for the first time. He got a new (2009) Cervelo P2C for this and following events.

A new me...The Triathlete

Four days ago I completed my second (sprint distance) triathlon, and finishing 5th was more than enough boost to start planning next year. I am done with this year regarding triathlons; no budget or time to schedule any more races around work.

Last night I started working out again. Did Yoga to do some passive stretching, it also let me figure out that I had to take some more days off as some positions made me hurt. Probably next week I will start with some weight lifting and light swim, bike, and run.

On to next years plan. The main goal is to complete the Half IronMan in Miami on October 2011. In the process to achieve this goal I will complete some Olympic and International distance events.

As for the gear, I will purchase my own tri bike and new goggles. My running shoes are almost new, no plans to replace them yet. Probably a new swim suit or tri suit.

Complications: I will get more hours at work and I am starting my Master's education. I will need to plan around this to schedule training and races. Also I have to spend some hours with the wife.

Keep on training...

Equalizer Sprint Triathlon (10-17-2010)

So, last Sunday I did my second sprint distance triathlon, the Equalizer Triathlon at Key Biscayne, FL. (Take a look at the picture album at the right of this page.)

Following my first Tri, so starting doing weight lifting at the gym with very little running, biking, and swimming. I was going to the pool once a week, took spinning classes (also once a week), and was doing 5Ks once a week (at a 30 min pace); but my main focus was to gain mass and lose fat (16% body fat). Exactly 3 weeks prior to this race, a friend starts talking to me on facebook about the race, and I was going to race it, he was. I checked my work schedule (some weekends I need to work) and luckily enough I was off. Went on to multirace.com website and signed up for the even.

Right after I signed up started planning for a change in my work out routines, no more weights and more swim, bike, run. Starting training twice a day for some days, luckily, my gym opened a new pool closer to home and was able to start swimming more often with out having to drive 1 hour to another pool (at FIU). Even though it was a sprint distance event, I was doing double the distance on each event during training; I did not want to be out of fuel during the running leg as in the previous triathlon. Also I started running with Fogo Running, a club started by a friend of mine; and I started taking Yoga, I read way to many articles off triathletes ripping the benefits of yoga that I did not want to be left out.

3 days before the race, I started to feel the effects of the amount of training I was doing; my legs and shoulders a little tired and sored. I knew anything I could do from that moment on wouldn't be beneficial, so I took all three days off and just rested to the race.

Race morning came up and I was up by 4:30 AM. Started my day by eating a banana (I can't eat anything else before sporting event, I learned that during my rugby days) and some water (woke up thirsty). Loaded up the car and headed to the bathroom (did not have to worry about port-o potties, later at the race :-) ). By 5 AM I was waking up my wife, grabbed some breakfast, and headed to the park. They same thing happened as the previous event, not that many racers so I could get body marked fast, got my chip, and swim cap (did not have anymore during packet pick up the day before), and went on to set up me transition.

7 AM race time, first the Olympic distance competitors started their race and by 7:20 AM the air horn let me know I should be swimming. In comparison to my first tri, this swim was easy, relaxed, goggles worked perfectly; I did get smacked on the head twice. Completed the swim in 0:10:11, I know slower than before, but I felt stronger coming out of the water. Grabbed a glass of water, gatorade, and a hammer gel before entering T1 from the volunteers.

T1 went without a glitch, same setup as before. Sun glasses, helmet, running shoes, bike, off I went. Bad thing is I knocked the only water bottle for the bike during mount and it opened, spilling all its accelerade content on the ground. I did not worry much about it. Drank my hammer gel, that I got from volunteers, as I started pedaling.

This time I went at a 20mph average the whole time (12.xx miles, a bit longer than previous tri), I know it is not that great, but I knew I could make it up during the run. Did a couple of passes, got passed, but it was fun. Arriving into T2 I drank my second hammer gel I had attached the night before to my bike. Bike time 0:38:28

Dismount and run my back into T2. Fastest T2 in my age group, 0:00:44. The only thing I had to do is hang the bike, remove helmet, grab visor and number belt.

Out of T2 and grabbed a glass of water and another gel for the run. I started running at 9 - 10 minutes per mile. After mile 1 I started to pick up the pace, by mile 2 I had my remaining gel and got another water to wash it down. From then on, I was smooth running to the finish line at an average of 8:16 minutes per mile. Wife was waiting by finish line, announcer called my name (I know he just searched my number on computer and read it) but it was a morale booster. 3.1 miles (5K) in 0:25:54.

Did not feel tired and started to think I could off pushed a bit harder on the bike. Another lesson learned for my next triathlon. I got a better idea on how to better plan and set the strategy for the races.

My First Sprint Tri Report.

If you are reading my blog, first I want to apologize for not updating it for that last 2 months and 7 days. I had other things go with my life and completely forgot about it.

First, I completed the my first Sprint Distance on August  15th. It was an amazing experience and it taught me a lot. My time was 1:14:50. Lets start from the beginning; I arrived at 5:30 am to Key Biscayne, not that many competitors had arrived at that time, so I was in and out of body marking and picking up the chip in 5 minutes. 10 minutes later I had my transition area set up, nice free time to relax and enjoy the sunrise with my wife.

7:20 AM It was time for my age group to start swimming (.25 miles / 400 meters). I was a straight shot you the swim exit, not turns. 0:07:06 and I was out of the water. I had to stop twice to get water of my goggles. I felt my arms on fire and when I was able to step on the ground I walked until out of the water and into T1.

During T1 I tried to do it as fast as possible but without for missing anything. I do not have cycling shoes so on went my running shoes helmet and off I went.

The cycling leg seemed to be very easy and I pushed harder than I should trying to recuperate some time lost on the swim. I was passing aero bikes like if they were standing. I ride a 198* steel Cannondale, that is small for me and property of my sister. 10 miles and 0:29:56 minutes later I was done and into T2.

T2 was a breeze I just had to hang the bike, take off my helmet, grab some water and my shirt.

Started the run very strong but about .25 miles my legs gave up. I guess all the effort on the bike trying to get some time back started to hurt my run. So I walked/jogged the remainder of the first mile. From mile 2 to the end I started jogging/running. Ended up doing the 3.1 miles (5K) in 0:33:03 when I am able to run 23s during training.

Felt a little disappointed on my self for burning all my strength during the bike and not having a planned a little better, but very very happy about successfully completing a triathlon.
